“There still wasn’t any Gypsium to do his G-string thing. Young Death, as he was best known below the larger Dome, didn’t blame the Diver. He reckoned – probably correctly – that Freespirit Nihila, whom he still regarded as Fisherwoman, must be taking it all into herself; her Borealis brolly, put better.

“She was up there all right. Was certainly no denying she was facially Fish, albeit with an extra eye and sporting more glitter in her wardrobe than even during the years she spent as Greater Godbad’s controversial queen (by marriage, not heredity). She’d somehow grown unheard of huge, bordering on ridiculously so. Those were definitely her feet to either side of Dustmound, though. Webbed toes gave that away. So the legs and all the rest of her towering above them had to be hers as well.”

Too bad the non-illusory side effect went walking 35 years ago

Jim McPherson, the creator/writer of the Phantacea Mythos, generally confines his rants to his Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pHantaJim). Not at all coincidentally pHantaJim is also the name of this page’s blog-meister. Funny that.

He likes Doonesbury, even the repeats, and when this came up on today’s date (http://doonesbury.washingtonpost.com/), this did too:

Duke runs Baby Doc Medical School. This week (in 1985) he’s holding a designer drug clinic on his Haitian campus dedicated to ‘Intensity’.

Phantacea is the Greek word for ‘imagination’. John Lennon wrote ‘Imagine’. Thirty-five years ago today his illusory ‘side effect’ did not go out for a walk.

As detailed throughout “Goddess Gambit“, Book Three of The Thrice-Cursed Godly Glories fantasy epic, and the ultimately related Launch 1980 story cycle, plenty was going on thirty-five years ago in the Phantacea Mythos.

Goddess Gambit: On Dustmound, Smiler, now possessing Molorchus, insists Vetala bears and has his azuras; when she refuses he reveals to her the truth of the VAM Entity, the amalgamate abom­ination (Mithras, Varuna & Ahriman were Thrygragos Sedon’s firstborn, not as per here the Thanatoids of Lathakra plus brood brother Phantast), and the consequential fact that her actual father was Sedon, not Mit­ravaruna;

Nuclear Dragons: In NYC, someone kills John Lennon; hearing of it on Centauri Island Hiyati Samarand (homunculus possessed by Bodiless Byron’s Dragon) has a heart attack; by now most of Sentalli’s Untouch­ables, most of whom turned out to be homunculi, aka homun beings, have died;

Goddess Gambit: Final battle for Dustmound begins; Trigregos Titan (Vetala’s Soldier) caked by tellurian material in the form of demons projected by Molorchus-Smiler (who’d established a pipeline to hell itself);

Helios on the Moon: Indescribable Mr No Name brings the cosmicompani­ons out of the computer while Smythe brings devic eyes to UNES Lib­erty; Strife takes over Mnemosy­ne Machine (unoccupied aspect of the Female Entity, that of memory); claims she has ejected the future Erebe-Night (actually Demon Queen Lilith, Smiler-Daemonicus’s Gomorrah) into a black hole after Starrus-Yajur;

The Launching of the Cosmic Express took place on Centauri Island at the end of November 1980. It was destroyed … Or was it? No matter. Its destroyers thought it was. And they’re not done yet.

Who or what can stop them? The Menace on the Moon? Silver-armoured Signal System? Supra-Clones? Loxus Abraham Ryne, the eighty year old head of SPACE (‘The Society for the Prevention of Alien Control of Earth’)? A couple of middle-aged, newly-minted supranormals named Doc Defiance and Mr. No Name?

A twenty-seven year old who neither knows who his parents were nor what an Amoeba Man was? An obesity who knows far more than he should but is disinclined to share that knowledge with anyone, not even his own son? Helios on the Moon comes down to Earth — again

Jim McPherson will be attending the 4th show this Sunday, 7 June 2015

Jim McPherson, the creator/writer of the Phantacea Mythos, will be a guest at this Sunday’s VANCOUVER COMIC & TOY SHOW #4: http://canadiancomics.net/.

Being a guest has its privileges so he’ll also be manning a full table containing just about everything still available for purchase from Phantacea Publications.

Some showy prices, too. $10.00 each for many of the full-length novels and all three graphic novels, $5.00 (bags included) for original comics from the 1970s (Phantacea 1-4 only), $5.00 for a couple of the mini-novels. Not to be beaten with a stick … or anything else, por favor.

It’s at Vancouver’s Croatian Cultural Centre, 16th and Commercial, from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. Admission is $5.00. Go to the Canadian comics site and scroll down for, surprise, surprise, an authorized shot of, um, the author.

In order to avoid offending the eye, and thus necessitating it having to be plucked out, it’s about the only photo he allows to be seen in public places besides the bottom of one of his sandals on his personal Facebook page.

In the Launch 1980 promo, artwork from the cover of the graphic novel, “Phantacea Revisited 1: The Damnation Brigade“, is by Ian Bateson, 2012, whereas artwork from the latest graphic novel, “Phantacea Revisited 2: Cataclysm Catalyst“, is by Verne Andru, 2014.

Jim McPherson prepared the graphic, the full version of which also features cover art from “The War of the Apocalyptics” and “Nuclear Dragons” by Ian Bateson as well as a reiteration of the front cover art for “Helios on the Moon” by Ricardo Sandoval.

The graphic below was prepared by Jim McPherson from a photo he took of the Sun (Helios called Sophos the Wise) and Moon (Miracle Memory) kissing in 2012 in Puerto Morelos, Mexico. They’re two of the Cornerstone Characters in the Phantacea Mythos.

Helios on the Moon exposed at long last

Jim McPherson, the creator-writer of the Phantacea Mythos, shall be manning the Phantacea Publications​ half-table at Heritage Hall this Sunday, 22 March. It’s the first Vancouver Comic Con of the year, so how can you miss it?

Even more importantly, he’ll have with him fresh-off-the-press copies of “Helios on the Moon“, the culminating novel in the Launch 1980 story cycle, as well as the three Phantacea graphic novels and first four comics from the original series.

Auroral lights no Borealis Brolly

Jim McPherson, the creator/writer of the Phantacea Mythos, recently returned from his late winter, early spring brain break.

A brain break for him of course means a new book is on the horizon for Phantacea Publications and pHanta-pHans everywhere. At least it has in the recent past, witness “Nuclear Dragons” and “Helios on the Moon“, the long-awaited concluding entries in the Launch 1980 epic trilogy.

Maybe not this time; at least not in terms of ‘new’ so much as recombined.

More on that as the year progresses, though you might find a couple of mysterious additions to the Earthlings’ row in the ‘Devils by Tribal Affiliation webpage that appeared last January instructive.

For now he’s happy to report some serendipitous readings in the January 2015 edition of Fortean Times (FT 323).


Here’s something I didn’t know. According to ‘Blasts from the Past’, a column by Theo Paijmans in FT 323 (p 32; “#55: The Cities of Lost Children”), an American writer, none other than Charles Fort himself, coined the term ‘teleportation’. (Wikipedia seems to confirm that he did just that — in 1931, to be absolutely precise — here.)

This would be the same Charles Fort (1874-1932), who inspired the delightful oddballs behind Fortean Times to launch, as long ago as 1973, what’s now a regular dweller in my bin of bathroom readings. (In the same issue, Arthur C Clarke is quoted as considering forteans “… ignorant and opinionated science-bashers.”)

Nearer to the beginning of the same issue (pp 6-7), we read about something else — better make that somebody else — I’d never heard of: namely, another American, a stage-managing ‘visionary pictographer’ as much as portrait photographer by the name of William Mortensen (1897-1965).

Talk about Peculiar Perspectives, I’d provide a link re this ‘master of American Grotesque’ but don’t want to get pHantaBlog into trouble. Don’t mind getting the US edition of Huffington Post in trouble, though. So have a boo, literally.

Will say that I googled him, which was where I learned of his relationship to Cecil B DeMIlle and Fay Wray, not to mention King Kong and the Mad Hatter. Also recognized his fabulous photographic imaging of Belphegor, Hell’s perceived Prince of Sloth, among other things, including invention.

(Which begs for an entry on Phantacea and that I’ll pass on to Webmeister Oz after I’m done passing this onto  pHantaJim, Blogmeister.*)

Header point being yet another article in FT 323: “I Sing the Mind Electric” by Marinus van der Sluijs (pp 40-43). As a preface, recall this from “Goddess Gambit“:

“Fisherwoman wasn’t there either. Not yet. Then she was, in a way. She was bigger than life, much bigger than Diminished Dustmound … She did look good in a glowingly golden, chain-mail hauberk; no question of that. And there was nothing better against incoming missiles, no matter what they were tipped with, than teleportive Brainrock chains.”

Or this, from the aforementioned:

Young Death, as he was best known below the larger Dome, didn’t blame the Diver. He reckoned – probably correctly – that Freespirit Nihila, whom he still regarded as Fisherwoman, must be taking it [teleportive Brainrock-Gypsium] all into herself; her Borealis brolly, put better.

Or this from a few pages later:

She [Fish-Nihila] twirled it, simultaneously raising it as if a Kevlar umbrella; impermeable not just over her, but over most of Diminished Dustmound. She thus rendered it akin to a roiling, Aurora Borealis sunshade; a whirling dervish’s flaring skirts, equally so.

So, not only am I and every other writer in books, for Star Trek, and many another elsewhere, indebted to Charles Fort for the word ‘teleportation’, it seems I’m personally indebted to the magazine he inspired for this quote from van der Sluijs’s article:

“… auroral emissions also occur at ultraviolet, infrared and other wavelengths. Enunciations of a dazzling geometry of dynamic shapes are common to both near-death experiences and eye-witness accounts of aurorae. And, bizarre as it admittedly sounds, there appears to be an uncanny logic to the impression that the auroral lights contain myriad units of incorporeal consciousness exchanging information.”

There’s also this caption under a pretty picture of the Northern Lights:

“… the Aurora Borealis [is] traditionally identified as the abode of posthumous souls.”

All of which makes for quite a stunning example of serendipitous reading, especially when you consider how my recently completed brain-break-writings concluded in terms of the as yet unresolved task of “Annuling Nihila“.
